How to Prepare
Moving houses is a huge process that takes a lot of meticulous time and money. There are a couple ways for you minimize those costs and hopefully ease this process to be a lot smoother.
Whether you are moving mansions, condos or even offices, the process should begin about five weeks prior to the designated move date. This gives you enough time to go through all your belongings and make sure you are only taking what you need.
Week 5:
The best thing to do in the first week of preparation is to research and look into moving companies. This should be a relatively easy and quick Google search to see what company is most popular and performs well. The majority of the time your realtor will give you some ideas of moving companies they know works hard and is cost effective but be sure to look for yourself.
The second thing you should begin doing in the fifth week is to start organizing and decluttering your place. As the move date becomes closer the more stressed you are most likely to be. In order to get ahead of that rush you want to make sure you are using your time wisely, keeping your move stress free.
Week 4:
After a week of thorough organizing, week four is when you should begin packing up your belongings room by room. This way you're consistently accomplishing something every couple of days. The best procedures would be to pack up areas/rooms that are not frequently used (i.e. basement closets etc) Slowly work your way into rooms like the family room, kitchen, living room etc and start boxing up certain items you know you will not be using in the upcoming weeks.
Week 3:
Week three should be spent packing up your room and if applicable your families rooms as well. A lot of the time children tend to have a lot more items than expected that have accumulated over the years. It is best to take some time and go through their rooms to make sure you are only moving the things they actually use.
Week 2:
Every fragile thing should be packed up by the end of week two. Items like desktop computers, majority of kitchen elements, lamps etc. You’d think this should be done in the last week or last couple days even but the next two weeks are going to go by in the blink of an eye and its best to get everything ready before then.
Week 1:
This will be the week when all that is left in your place is beds, furniture and anything else you use on a daily basis. This is also the week to make sure everything is packed up and ready to go for when the moving company comes. During this week you will also want to confirm your personal details and arrival time with the moving company. It is best to let them know if you have any restrictions (parking, elevators etc) that they might encounter when they come to move you out. Any very personal smaller items be sure to take with you as you do not want to risk the chance of them getting broken.
Moving Day:
With all the work done in the previous weeks, this day should feel like the easiest of all. Whether you are in the midst of a local move or a long distance move professional moving companies offer a full range of services to help make this day even easier than expected. Be sure to take one last look through your moving checklist before you depart! That is the best way to be sure you do not forget anything.
